Daniel from The Ghibli Blog has found a translated transcript of very insightful interview/discussion between director Mamoru Oshii (Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, The Sky Crawlers) and Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki at welcome datacomp.
The main subjects of the discussion were (absent) director Hayao Miyazaki, Ponyo, The Sky Crawlers, jellyfishes, getting older and nothing less than the future of animation.
While the conversation already took place in August 2008 during Suzuki’s radio show [MP3 download] it’s still pretty newsworthy for us because Ponyo and Sky Crawlers are just arriving at our shores.
The discussion in the transcript reads a bit heated because of the sometimes pretty harsh words (especially towards Miyazaki) but if you listen to the radio show you can hear (even without knowing any Japanese) that this really was a friendly conversation between two old confreres. Another thing I noticed (and made my kinda ‘proud’) was the fact that Oshii criticizes the same thing about Ponyo like I did in my recent review:

Suzuki: Was the movie no good?
Oshii: No, it [Ponyo] was interesting to watch. What I mean by that is that Miya-san’s wild ideas are interesting to watch. The problem is that it wasn’t a real movie. It wasn’t put together like a proper movie. Not one bit.

Holy fraudulent representation, Batman! Seems like Sony Pictures Home Entertainment marketing team pursues it’s plan to sell us Mamoru Oshii’s latest anime work The Sky Crawlers as a no-holds-barred, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride. Not only does the recently released cover art for the films’ upcoming US DVD and Blu-ray release (May 26, 2009) reminds me a lot of Top Gun in regards of colouring and positioning, but the recently released English trailer also only features scenes of thrilling aerial duels and massive battles.
While this kind of marketing may help to sell some more copies at first, I think it could even hurt the film itself on the long run when (easily bored) people don’t get the promised action and tell their friends about “this really boring movie…”.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love The Sky Crawlers for the film it is, but you’re gonna be dissapointed when you’re expecting an action flick!

DVD Times has update it’s story on Sony Pictures’ US Blu-ray Disc release of Mamoru Oshii’s The Sky Crawlers with the official cover art. Doesn’t look to bad, except for that unnecessary quote at the bottom, but I think Sony Pictures focuses a bit to much on the aerial fights/action aspect of the film which could lead to some bitter disappointment for people expecting an action film…which The Sky Crawlers is clearly not!
DVD Times also mentions, that the disc will be coded for all regions, so it’s safe to place your order now, no matter where you live. The Sky Crawlers will be releases on May 26, 2009.

I’ve reported about this release a while ago over at the Asian Blu-ray Guide, but since new details for Sony Pictures Home Entertainments US Blu-ray Disc and DVD of Mamoru Oshii’s The Sky Crawlers got announced today, I decided to mention it here as well. DVD Times reports that May 26th has been confirmed as the official release date.
Just as expected, both editions will include the original Japanese audio track, an English dub and English subtitles. Sony hasn’t released details on the BD audio format yet, but judging from their former releases, we don’t have to worry about not getting at least one lossless audio track.
As for the region code, Sony has released some anime with (Tekkonkinkreet) and without (Paprika and Final Fantasy) region A encoding, so we’ll have to wait for some confirmation on that aspect.

HMV Japan hat als erster Händler die japanischen DVD (pöh) und Blu-ray Disc Veröffentlichungen von Mamoru Oshii letzten Werk The Sky Crawlers gelistet. Alle Editionen werden am 25. Februar erscheinen, wobei es bei der Blu-ray Variante eine Standardausgabe sowie eine Limited Edition geben wird. Diese enthält neben dem Film diverses Bonusmaterial auf drei DVDs (man hätte ja auch einfach eine weitere Blu-ray Disc nehmen können…), ein 1/72 Modell eines der im Film gezeigten Kampfjets sowie diverse Booklets und ein Storybook. All das wird in einer passenden Box geliefert, die ein bisschen an eine US Frühhstücksbox mit Klappverschluss erinnert. Die LE schlägt ein rund 380€ tiefes Loch in die Sammlerkasse, wobei man allerdings keine englischen Untertitel erwarten kann. Zumindest hat HMV (noch) keine gelistet. Das könnte vielleicht daran liegen, daß sich Sony Pictures im September die internationalen Vertriebsrechte gesichert hat und den Film erstmal in ausgewählten US Kinos zeigt bevor man sich um eine Heimkinoauswertung kümmert.

Öh, da bin ich jetzt aber ein bisschen überrascht. Eigentlich hatte ich erwartet, daß sich Warner die internationalen Vertriebsrechte für Mamoru Oshiis letztes Werk The Sky Crawlers bereits gesichert hatte, da ihr Logo in den Trailern sowie auf der offiziellen Seite zum Film mehrmals auftaucht. Variety Asia berichtet aber nun, daß sich Sony Pictures die Vertriebsrechte für die USA, Kanada, Lateinamerika, Australien und Neuseeland gesichert hat. Für Europa hat sich offenbar noch kein Vetrieb gefunden, obwohl der Film aktuell auf dem Fimfestival in Venedig gefeiert wird.
Ich hoffe mal das Sony die Kinoauswertung in den USA gleich überspringt und den Film direkt auf DVD und Blu-ray Disc bringt, damit man sich in Europa nicht allzulange gedulden muss.

Auf der offiziellen Website zu Mamoru Oshiis The Sky Crawlers gibt es einen über fünf Minuten langen Promo Clip zu bewundern, der neben absolut beeindruckenden Luftkämpfen leider immernoch das in meinen Augen zu simple Design der Hauptcharaktere präsentiert.

Da in den Credits auch Warner Bros. aufgeführt wird, hoffe ich mal daß man sich auch im Westen auf eine baldige Veröffentlichung freuen kann.

Erstaunlicherweise nicht auf der inzwischen neu gestalteten Website zum Film, sondern bei teh YouTube ist ein neuer Trailer zu Mamoru Oshiis The Sky Crawlers aufgetaucht. Im Gegensatz zu den vorherigen Trailern gibt es hier neben ein paar Flugzeugen und Wolkenbildern auch mal die Charaktere zu sehen, wobei man gerade da von Production I.G schonmal besseres gesehen hat.

Production I.G hat einen zweiten Teaser Trailer zum neuen Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) Projekt The Sky Crawlers veröffentlicht. Zur Hintergrundgeschichte der Romanumsetzung des japanischen Autoren Hiroshi Mori hatte ich mich bereits im ersten Beitrag zum Film ausgelassen. Der japanische Kinostart soll am 2. August 2008 sein, mal schauen ob es Oshii wieder schafft seinen Dachshund ins Cockpit zu schmuggeln.
