Blood: The Last Vampire: Japan DVD and Blu-ray Disc

While Chris Nahon’s live-action adaptation of Production I.G’s 2000 Anime Blood: The Last Vampire arrived in theaters in many countries just a few days ago (or even hasn’t like in the USA), Kadokawa already announced a home video release for the Japanese market.
Jeon Ji-Hyun’s adventures as the katana-wielding vampire huntress Saya will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on October 9th. According to CDJapan both releases will include English subtitles, even though the original language is English anyway. What about adding English subtitles to releases of films in other languages, huh Kadokawa?
With the current price of 49US$, the Blu-ray Disc can almost be called ‘cheap’…at least for Japanese standards, especially since CDJapan is currently giving away free 500 Yen coupons. Sadly you can’t always trust the region code information coming from CDJapan, but so far no Kadokawa Blu-ray Disc has been reported as region locked.

See the first 5 Minutes of Blood: The Last Vampire!

Just in time for the theatrical opening on May 29 in Japan, the local Yahoo! branch is streaming the first five minutes and 27 seconds on the Blood: The Last Vampire live-action adaptation starring Jeon Ji-hyun. Thanks to the annoyingly slow Japanese server the video won’t play smooth for me, but I’ll try to post a local steaming solution later today.

Sony Pictures will bring Blood: The Last Vampire to the US, celebrates with new Trailer

It’s been a while since Pathé Films acquired the European distribution rights for the Blood: The Last Vampire live-action adaptation and announced to bring the film into French and British theaters in June, while US fans could only watch in envy. But now, by opening the official US website Sony Pictures announced that they will bring Jeon Ji-Hyun as the katana-wielding vampire hunter Saya to US screens as well! There isn’t a release date know yet, but I guess this still counts as good news for you guys.
To celebrate the announcement, Sony has also released their own trailer which differs a bit from the already known UK version.

Film distributor Pathé! has a nice present for all you Jeon Ji-Hyun fans out there. Blood: The Last Vampire: Rated ’18′ in the UK

I know, I know…excessive violence, blood fountains and schoolgirls played by Korean beauties slaying vampires with katana swords don’t always make a good film. Nonetheless, it’s good to see that director Chris Nahon didn’t go for another PG-13 slasher and his live-action adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire has been awarded by the British film classification board BBFC with a “18″ rating. Here’s their classification statement in full glory:

BLOOD – THE LAST VAMPIRE is a film adaptation of a Japanese anime about a female vampire searching for her nemesis, the Onegin. The film was classified ’18′ for strong bloody violence.

The main vampire character repeatedly uses a sword to dispatch various creatures, including other vampires and winged monsters. The violence she inflicts often occurs in a rapidly edited flurry of blows without a focus on injury detail. There is, however, a large quantity of blood in evidence, which sprays from wounds in huge spurts with the strongest moments including the severing of a man’s arm and all of another man’s fingers, plus the close up sight of a sword piercing an eyeball. These moments were felt to fall under the term ‘the strongest gory images’ which, under the BBFC guidelines, are unacceptable at ’15′, while not exceeding the bounds of the ’18′ category.

The film also contains one use of strong language, amongst some milder language including ‘piss’ and ‘bitch’.

Pathe UK has released the UK theatrical trailer for the live-action adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire. While the first Japanese teaser trailer only showed nicely edited action scenes, this one even features some English dialogue from lovely Jeon Ji-Hyun. Blood opens in the UK on June 12, 2009.

Blood: The Last Vampire: Subtitled Japanese Blu-ray Disc in May

Talking about the freshly teased Blood: The Last Vampire, the 2000 Anime original from Production I.G will see a Blu-ray Disc release on May 27th, 2009 in Japan. The Japanese retailer Forest Plus lists English subtitles, so warm up your credit cards if you’re a fan of this. The release is also supposed to include two versions of the films, one is a direct digital master transfer and the other is a new HD telecine transfer from the 35mm film.

Blood: The Last Vampire: Japanese Website & International release dates

The official Japanese website for Chris Nahon’s live action adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire went online a few days ago and while it lacks some real content, at least it shows us another nice image of Korean sweetheart Jeon Ji-Hyun as the mysterious vampire huntress Saya. The film is scheduled to open in Japanese theatres on May 29, 2009.
Distribution rights for some parts of Europe have been acquired by Pathe Films, so Great Britain and France will see a threatric release in June. Universal Pictures got the North American distribution rights last August but hasn’t announced a release date yet.

Im KFC Cinema Forum sind neue Bilder zur Realverfilmung des Blood: The Last Vampire Anime aufgetaucht. Die linken Shots zeigen Saya vor ihrem Leben als Halbvampir, während ~~Gianna~~ Jeon Ji-Hyun rechts in die berühmte Schüleruniform schlüpfen darf.

Die Nachfolgeserie Blood+ erscheint übrigens im März nach langer Zeit (sowie einer TV Ausstahlung) endlich auch als US DVD, entweder als Einzel DVD mit fünf Folgen oder als erstes von zwei Komplettsets mit 25 Folgen auf sechs DVDs.

Das französische Filmmagazin filmsactu.com hat das erste Foto aus der Realverfilmung des Blood: The Last Vampire Animes veröffentlicht. Hauptdarstellerin Jeon Ji-Hyun in japanischer Schulmädchenuniform macht schonmal mehr Lust auf den Film als der lahme Promoshot vom letzten Monat.

Bei 24Framespersecond ist der erste Promoshot zur Realverfilmung des Blood: The Last Vampire Animes aufgetaucht. Die geheimnisvolle Monsterjägerin Saya wird in der englischsprachigen Produktion von Koreas süßestem Exportschneckchen Jeon Ji-Hyun (My Sassy Girl, Windstruck, Il Mare) gespielt, ihre Auftraggeber von Liam Cunningham und JJ Feild. Wer in dem Bild Sayas Arbeitsuniform vermisst, kann sie hier auf einem aus der Hüfte geschossenen Setbild sehen.
Im Regiestuhl hat im letzten Jahr Chris Nahon (Kiss of the Dragon, Empire of the Wolves) Platz genommen, was schonmal nicht viel gutes für den Kinostart im nächsten Jahr erwarten lässt. Wobei die Anime Vorlage von 2000 bis auf die nette Optik ja auch schon kein Highlight war.
