YesAsia (and other retailers) are now listing re-releases of both films that come in standard Blu-ray Disc amaray cases instead of those nice digipaks (see here and here) like the previous special editions. But at least the prices remain the same…

While Kim Ji-Woon’s oriental western The Good, The Bad and the Weird has already been released on Blu-ray Disc in several countries, all these releases have some kind of small drawback. The British release by Icon Home Entertainment offers the International version (and the Korean ending as an bonus feature) but suffers from several small cuts that were made because of animal cruelty (falling horses) during the showdown.
The Korean release (looking great in the digipak and sleeve) is fully uncut in this department but only includes the shorter International cut (just like the French release), a fact that has only been announced a few days before the release.
Now Warner Japan announced to bring a release that includes the Korean and International cut (both with falling horses) and English subtitles on February 10, 2010. The only setback could be the price of currently 5,905 Yen (~45 € or 66 US$) without shipping…

Looks quite good, just as expected from a Korean release. But I’m a bit worried about the part in the article description that says that the Blu-ray Disc will include the shorter international cut while the Korean DVD Special Edition released back in March included both cuts.
I’ve contacted the K2DVD support about this, they seem to be pretty reliable when it comes to things like this.
Update: K2DD cofirmed that the Blu-ray Disc release will only include the International cut and will b delayed to September 24th.

Play.com has listed a fine selection of Asian Blu-ray releases that will hit the british shelves starting in late May. According to the listing Noboru Iguchi’s cult classic Machine Girl will be released on May 18th, followed by the Korean smash hit, The Good, the Bad and the Weird from director Kim Ji-Woon on June 1st, 2009. Stay tuned for more details.

Almost nine months after Kim Ji-Woon’s The Good, The Bad and the Weird conquered the Korean cinemas, a official DVD release has been announced. And since it’s a Korean release, there will also a limited edition with three DVD available on March 11th, 2009. The three discs include the Korean cut, the slightly shorter international cut and a bunch of extra material. Sadly there’s no word of a Blu-ray Disc, looks like KD Media went back to hibernation after releasing only three titles.
YesAsia lists English subtitles, which should make most of us pretty happy. Korean DVD site MadMad.co.kr also shows a wooden toy gun, but according to a crude Google translation this gimmick won’t be available in all stores.

Im Laufe der Woche ist übrigens durchgesickert, daß nach den Dreharbeiten in der Nähe des Good/Bad/Ugly Drehorts der Actionchoreograph und Stuntmen Ji Jung-Hyeon tödlich verünglückt ist. Ji Jung-Hyeon hat unter anderem die im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes Hammer Szene in OldBoy inszeniert.

Director Kim said that the movie showing in Cannes and the movie premiering in Korea had different endings. “The Korean version has more humor and action, and it is more entertaining so the whole family can enjoy it”.

Ich hoffe mal daß beide Varianten des Endes auf der wohl nicht nur von mir heiß erwarteten DVD Veröffentlichung enthalten sein werden…

Mit Lust, Caution erscheint übrigens am 15. Juni die erste Blu-ray Disc von einem koreanischen Label (Art Service), vielleicht nimmt sich CJ Entertainment das ja als Vorbild und bringt auch TGTBTW als Blu-ray Fassung raus. drool

Inzwischen ist auch einiges mehr zum Film bekannt, dessen Laufzeit trotz früherer Gerüchte vor Cannes nun brave 120 Minuten betragen soll. Mittelpunkt des Films ist eine Karte, die Zugräuber The Weird (Tae-goo [Song Kang-ho]) dem japanischen Militär gestohlen hat, das ihm darauf hin The Bad (Chang-yi [Lee Byung-Hun]) auf den Hals hetzt. Beiden gleichzeitig auf den Fersen bei der Jagd durch die manchurische Wüste der 30er Jahre ist der Kopfgeldjäger The Good (Do-won [Jung Woo-sung]).

Obwohl der Film bereits auf einigen Webseiten als Kandidat für die kommenden Cannes Filmfestspiele gelistet wird, ist noch nicht ganz sicher ob der Film, dessen letzte Klappe Anfang Februar fiel, pünktlich zum Festivalstart fertig sein wird. Laut Berichten ist der Streifen momentan gute vier Stunden lang, was selbst für das hartgesottene Festivalpublikum einige Minuten zu lang sein dürfe. Deshalb wird gemunkelt, daß Kim Ji-Woon den Kill Bill Weg einschlägt und den Streifen zweigeteilt im Sommer (10. Juli laut 24fps) in die koreanischen Kinos bringen wird. Bis weiteres bekannt gegeben wird, gibt es erstmal frisches Postermaterial als kleinen Pausenfüller.

Die Vertriebsrechte hat sich Koreas größter Filmverleih CJ Entertainment gesichert, der Film soll seine Premiere im Mai in Cannes feiert und ab Juli in den koreanischen Kinos laufen. Bis ein ordentlicher Trailer veröffentlicht wird, gibt es nach dem Sprung ein paar neuen Szenen in einem frischen Bericht aus dem koreanischen TV als Überbrückung.
