Synopsis:

It is the year 2194. The Gamilons, an enemy of undetermined form, begin an invasion of Earth. The nations of Earth pool their forces and fight back, but their armies are defeated and most of humanity wiped out.

Five years later, in 2199, the Earth has been polluted by space-to-planet bombs, and those who remain alive have fled underground. Even the former top pilot, Susume Kodai, has left the military. One day as he is exploring above-ground, a mysterious object falls out of the sky. This is a communications capsule from the planet of Iscandar, 148,000 light years distant.

Apparently on Iscandar is equipment that will eliminate the radiation. The Defense Force of Earth equips the Space Battleship Yamato with a previously unknown propulsion system, a wave-motion engine based on plans found in the capsule. Kodai rejoins the Force, and resolves to set out aboard the “Yamato.” With the fate of the Earth in their hands, the crew blasts off for distant Iscandar. They have one year until radiation drives humanity to extinction. Kodai great battle has begun. Carrying humanity last hope with it, the Yamato blasts off!

Threesome for the Ladies: Japanese Teaser Trailer for I Come with the Rain

I thought that I should cover something for the ladies for a change after most of my entries are obviously pointed towards the male idea of eye candy. Starring Josh Hartnett, Takuya Kimura and Lee Byung-Hun, Anh Hung Tran’s Thriller I Come with the Rain might be something for you girls (and boy) if you can stand the pretty gruesome scenes featured in the atmospheric Japanese teaser trailer below.
Harnett plays the Los Angeles ex-cop Kline who works as a private eye and travels to the Philippines to find Shitao (SMAP’s Takuya Kimura), the missing son of a Chinese billionaire. Together with his former colleague Meng Zi (Shawn Yue) Kline follows a lead to Hong Kong’s local gangster Su Dongpo (Lee Byung-Hun) and his drug addicted girlfriend Lili (Tran Nu Yên-Khê). Caught in the crossfire between the mafia and the police, Kline is haunted by memories of the former work and the horrible acts he committed…

I Come with the Rain opens on June 6, 2009 in Japan. There’s no word of an international release yet, even the planned premiere at Cannes has been canceled. An almost six minutes long promotion clip has been released last year..

Will Hollywood turn Ninja Scroll into J-Pop Scroll?

Oh boy, I really hope that this is just some kind of late April Fool’s joke. ANN reports in reference to Nikkan Sports (must be a great source for movie related news) that the members of the five-headed J-Pop boygroup SMAP (Sports Music Assemble People) are considered to be casted as the main leads in the live-action adaptation of Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s anime classic Ninja Scroll. Leonardo DiCaprio, whose production company Appian Way has acquainted the rights last autumn has outed himself as a big fans of Japanese animation promised “not to make the movie until the script is in the right shape”. What noble words…
SMAP is one of the biggest Japanese boygroups and was founded in 1991. All members, Masahiro Nakai, Takuya Kimura, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Goro Inagaki and Shingo Katori have already acted in several tv series and (mostly manga and anime related) films, but I don’t think that they are the right guys for the main job(s). They could serve as canon sword-fodder for a capable Jubei actor for all I care… ;)
