Review: Sword of the Stranger US Blu-ray Disc

Since my copy of Bandai Entertainment’s US Blu-ray Disc release of Sword of the Stranger (Mukoh Hadan) arrived a few days before the official release date on June 16, here’s my short review on the disc itself. Luckily and unlike on their Ghost in the Shell: Innocence release, Bandai has decided not to use region encoding so feel free to (pre-)order, there’s no need to wait for the announced Region B release.
Bandai also does not repeat the audio track mistake from their first BD release (lossy DD only), as both audio tracks (original Japanese and English) on Sword of the Stranger are available in sweet and lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 that especially shine during the grand finale and the fight scenes accompanied by Naoki Sato’s gripping score. The English subtitles are available for all dialogues or signs only which is a nice gift to fans of the English dub.
The visual presentation of Masahiro Ando’s adventure tale should also convince those who keep on repeating the same “animation does not benefit from higher resolution” jabber. The characters as well as the detailed background art just look great, especially the stunningly animated fight scenes. Studio Bones’ artists did really flex their muscles in these scenes when it comes to animation quality and choreography. The picture is virtually free of compression artefacts and banding effects, which sometimes are issue on Anime releases on Blu-ray Disc.

To fill the BD50, Bandai has included some interviews and Japanese press events (HD), several trailers and TV spots (SD & HD) for the main features and even a three minutes long pilot film (HD).
All in all, Bandai Entertainment has shown with this release that they can indeed rival the Japanese release when it comes to picture and sound quality. Meaning good times for high definition anime fans are coming if Bandai can keep this up with their following releases (The Girl Who Leapt through Time, please?).

Bandai Entertainment has finally announced its long promised US DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Studio BONES anime Sword of the Stranger (Mukoh Hadan)…well, at least they posted the highly official cover art over at the Anime on DVD forum. There’s no release date mentioned, but word is that we can all look forward to June for some high resolution samurai action.

Hopefully Bandai Entertainment will use the transfer from Honneamise’s impressive Japanese BD release and only add English subtitles (and an English dub for those who don’t like reading) without messing it up like their latest Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence release where they left out all the good HD audio tracks.
Update: Bandai just announced that Sword of the Stranger will see a US release on June 16, 2009!

Bandai Entertainment bringt Sword of the Stranger auf DVD und Blu-ray Disc

Auf der bis morgen laufenden FanimeCon 2008 hat Bandai Entertainment verkündet, Sword of the Stranger (Mukoh Hadan) von BONES Studio auf dem US Markt zu bringen. Der Film soll ab Juli auf einigen Festivals (unter anderem auch auf der AnimagiC in Bonn) gezeigt werden und anschließend mit einem breiteren Kinoauswertung auf DVD und Blu-ray Disc erscheinen. Einen genauen Erscheinungstermin gibt es, genau wie bei Bandai Entertainments Ghost in the Shell: Innocence Blu-ray Ankündigung noch nicht.
In Japan wurde der Film bereits im April auf DVD und Blu-ray von Bandai Visual veröffentlicht, beide Varianten enthalten aber (mal wieder) keine englischen Untertitel.
Mich hat der Film (mit Untertiteln) schwer begeistert und rutscht trotz des “Kind mit Hund” Hintergrunds nie in gefährlich kitschige Gefilde ab. Die an sich recht einfache Geschichte wird durch die extrem gut animierten und geschickt choreographierten Kämpfe sowie einige Nebenplots gut voran getrieben, ohne daß die Charakterentwicklung auf der Strecke bleibt. Der Showdown ist schon in der DVD Variante absolut atemberaubend und dürfte in der Blu-ray Variante ein absoluter Kinnladenkiller werden.

AnimagiC 2008: Premieren und Ehrengäste zum Con Jubiläum

Das Team des AnimaniA Magazins hat Neuigkeiten zur diesjährigen AnimagiC Convention bekannt gegeben. Die mittlerweile zehnte Ausgabe der Anime, Manga und Nippon Ausstellung wird dieses Jahr vom 1. bis 3. August in der Beethovenhalle in Bonn abgehalten.
Zeitgleich findet im WOKI Filmpalast das Animotion Filmfestival statt, auf dem als Deutschlandpremiere Rebuild of Evangelion: Evangelion 1.0: You Are [Not] Alone präsentiert wird. Außerdem gibt es noch Appleseed: Ex Machina, Sword of the Stranger (Mukoh Hadan), Vexille sowie Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa zu sehen, alle Filme erfreulicherweise im japanischen Originalton mit englischen Untertiteln.
Personaltechnisch wird ebenfalls einiges geboten, als Ehrengäste werden Appleseed (Ex Machina) Regisseur Shinji Aramaki, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Schöpfer Kenji Kamiyama von Production I.G sowie Studio BONES Gründer Masahiko Minami präsentiert. Zudem werden diverse Manga-ka aus Japan und Deutschland die Messe unsicher machen, wobei J-Pop Sternchen Nana Kitade mit einem Konzert am 2. August für passende musikalische Untermalung sorgt.
Mal schauen ob ich dieses Jahr Zeit habe dort aufzukreuzen, der Termin ist leider gefährlich nah am Abschluß meiner Diplomarbeit dran. Aber vielleicht wenn die Presseakkreditierung durchkommt…

Sword of the Stranger – Mukoh Hadan: Fünf Minuten Clip

Während die zuletzt hier präsentierten Clips vom Sword of the Stranger (Mukoh Hadan) Anime eher durch knappe Laufzeiten und schnelle Schnitte auffielen, lässt sich Studio BONES diesmal nicht lumpen und präsentiert drei Wochen vor dem japanischen Kinostart die (fast) ersten fünf Minuten des Films. Da das Video durch skurille Sicherheitsmaßnahmen geschütz war, hat eine gute Seele im AnimeSuki Forum das Teil für Normalsterbliche bei YouTube zwischengelagert.

Sword of the Stranger – Mukoh Hadan: Clips

Zum neuen BONES Studio Anime Sword of the Stranger – Mukoh Hadan (ã‚¹ãƒˆãƒ¬ãƒ³ãƒ‚ã‚¢ ï¼ç„¡çš‡åˆƒèš) [ANN] gibt es auf der japanischen Website einige nett animierte, jedoch leider nur sehr kurze Ausschnitte zu bestaunen. In der ‘Movie’ Rubrik werden nur die Clips 1,2 und 6 angezeigt, aber neugierig wie ich nunmal bin habe ich mit meinem Affentrailerstöckchen rumgepopelt und noch vier weitere Clips gefunden. Leider ist zu dem Film noch nicht viel bekannt, außer daß er im feudalen Japan während der Muromachi Ära spielt und die gemeinsame Reise eines namenlosen Killers sowie eines Jungen, den er eigentlich umbringen sollte, erzählt. Falls jemand japanisch kann, würde ich mich über eine kurze Zusammenfassung freuen.
