AKIRA: UK Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combi Steelbook [Update]

Manga Entertainment UK just tweeted a high resolution product shot for the UK Blu-ray Disc release of Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA.
The BD/DVD combi will hit the shelves in a nice steelbook package (probably because the Brits had to wait so long for their ‘own’ release) for a limited time on June 27th. I guess the BD itself will be the same as the one in the amazing US and Japanese release that I told you about maaaany times before…

“…bash ‘em in the head!” Shaun of the Dead Blu-ray Disc Steelbook

I stopped (re)buying films just because of a nice package some time ago, but I just love the cover design on the Canadian Blu-ray Disc steelbook (re)release of Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead coming from Alliance Pictures on November 2nd…

German Trailer for Mamoru Oshiis The Sky Crawlers

The Sky Crawlers isn’t exactly a hot topic, but just in time for the upcoming German DVD and Blu-ray Disc release, Universum Anime brings us a dubbed trailer for Mamoru Oshii’s latest theatrical anime. You may not understand a word if you’re reading the English version of this site, but let me tell you that this trailer is quite different from the misleading US trailer from Sony Pictures that tries to sell the film as a Top Gun type action flick.

Splendid brings Casshern and Goemon to Blu-ray Disc

Good news for fans of Kazuaki Kiriya. German distributor Splendid Film announced to release all films (yes, that’s two) from the Japanese director on Blu-ray Disc in Germany on May 28, 2010. While Kiriya’s 2004 debut Casshern will only come in a standard amaray, Splendid will release Goemon in a limited edition steelbook (without those garsty rating logo on the front) as well. All releases will include the original Japanese audio track, but as expected from Splendid, Casshern will only include German subtitles while Goemon is supposed to also have Dutch subtitle options.
So far there are no English subtitled Blu-ray Disc releases of these films available. Casshern has been released in Italy in 2008 and Goemon has already plundered Japan and France.

Johnnie To’s Vengance: French DVD & Blu-ray Disc in December

Sometimes, but just sometimes it must be great to live in a film-loving nation like France, because our friendly south-western neighbors were not only the first that could see Johnnie To’s Vengeance on the big screen back in May, but will also be the first to get a DVD and Blu-ray Disc release. On December 11th, TF1 Video will release the film in three flavors, a standard one disc edition, a two disc collector’s edition and of a Blu-ray Disc edition in a nice looking steelbook.

Sadly none of these releases will included English subtitles and TF1 Video also has the bad habit to enforce the French subtitles when the original (mostly english in Vengeance) language track is selected. But since Vengeance opened in Hong Kong on August 20th, I bet English friendly HK DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases will pop up by the end of the year as well. Until then, enjoy the film’s (ironically French subbed) trailer below.

Inglourious Basterds UK Blu-ray Disc Steelbook [Update]

mmh, I don’t think the German customs officers will pleased when they see this… ;)
Universal Pictures will release the limited edition Blu-ray Disc steelbook of Quentin Tarantino’s historically accurate WW2 documentation Inglourious Basterds in the UK on December 7th. Currently only Play.com shows the steelbook packaging, but since the product page doesn’t say “Play.com exclusive” I guess it will be available from other online retailers (like the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Blu-ray Disc steelbook) as well.

[Update] Looks like our British friends won’t get a steelbook after all:

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Blu-ray Disc Steelbook

Here’s something nice for you steelbook lovers from our friendly neighbours in the UK. While Sony Pictures USA decided to release Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon only as a part of a Blu-ray Trilogy Box together with House of Flying Daggers (cut) and Curse of the Golden Flower (Code A) on July 14, British film lover can enjoy Ang Lee’s masterpiece on Blu-ray without the extra weight (film wise), over a week earlier (UK release is on July 6th) and in a sweet steelbook package.
At the moment only the Jersey based retailer Play.com shows the steely package but I think/hope that other retailers will offer this edition as well since the product description says nothing about this being an Play.com exclusive.
Update: Someone in the German Cinefacts forum got his steelbook from dvd.co.uk today, so I guess it’s available everywhere. Update²: Amazon.co.uk also ships steelbooks.
