FUNimation sends Samurai 7 on Blu-ray to compression hell…
Buying FUNimation’s DVD releases has always been an two-edged sword for me. On the one side I absolutely love their package design, especially on their lovely Boxsets (see Basilisk, Mushisi and Beck) and the informative booklets. But then there are FUNimation’s obvious problems with their encoding process which show themself in disappointing picture quality with soft edges and often compression artefacts. I thought they got their stuff together with the first pretty good Blu-ray Disc they’ve released (see Afro Samurai and Shinobi), but after looking at these captures from their upcoming Samurai 7 Complete Collection Blu-ray Disc it looks like FUNi fell back to their old habits again.
Color banding and heavy compression artefacts all over the place! Something must have gone terrrible wrong during the encoding process. Doesn’t FUNimation have people in quality control that actually, you know, watch the stuff they’re trying to sell? This is pretty sad, especially for such an important release like Samurai 7. I just hope FUNimation gets it’s stuff together before they screw up their upcoming Shigurui release as well!
