Porco Rosso: Coming to Blu-ray Disc in July!

Hayao Miyazaki fans rejoice! After several months without any new Blu-ray Disc announcements from Studio Ghibli AV Watch now reports that Miyazaki’s 1992 Porco Rosso will get a high resolution release in Japan on July 17th. Next to other languages the disc will include English subtitles and English audio. Check out the Asian Blu-ray Guide listing for more details.
Now what about Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, huh?

Hayao Miyazaki Talks Porco Rosso Sequel

In the September issue of Cut magazine, Studio Ghibli mastermind Hayao Miyazaki revealed some key points about his next project. Thanks to the translation from the friendly folks at Nausicaa.net we now can all look forward to a sequel from Miyazaki’s 1992 Porco Rosso:

“I’m not thinking about a movie of a girl.”
“I think that I must think about only a movie of a boy.”
“I do not need to make a movie if it is not a tragic story of a boy.”
“So I want to escape to “Porco Rosso: The Last Sortie“. I have all its materials.”
“It should be interesting.”
“It is set for Spanish Civil War.”

Studio Ghibli HD/Blu-ray Disc Preview Screenshots

I just got my copy of the Japanese Joe Hisaishi in Budokan – Miyazaki Anime to Tomo ni Ayunda 25 Nenkan Blu-ray Disc that not only includes the incredible anniversary concert of Hayao Miyazaki’s favourite composer Joe Hisaishi but also a nice surprise for those of us who cry themselves to sleep every night because there’s still no Studio Ghibli film available on Blu-ray Disc.
The bonus feature consists of selection of music videos with scenes taken from some of Hayao Miyazaki’s masterworks (sadly not from Totoro, Laputa and Spirited Away) in HD quality! While these videos have been encoded in 1920×1080i and sometimes show compression artifacts and edge enhancement effects (especially Kiki), they are the closest thing to a Blu-ray Disc preview for Studio Ghibli films we currently have. So this is what we can at least expect quality wise for next year when the studio starts to release their catalog titles (Ponyo is supposed be the first in December).
Please note that the 100 (!) screenshots below (as always) contain spoilers and can’t show just how good these films look in motion, so do yourself a favour and buy the BD! ;)

Sehr schöne Aktion, auch wenn man die Filme alle schon auf DVD hat. Bei mir in der Nähe gibt es natürlich kein Aktionskino, verdammtes Cinemaxx Monopol!
