Rumors about a Hollywood remake of Chan-wook Park’s OldBoy or rather the original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi have been around the net for several years now. After Stephen Spielberg and Will Smith left the project about two years ago and other candidates like Danny Boyle and Matthew Vaughn didn’t get their chance, Mandate Pictures (finally?) got some confirmed news for us. Rope of Silicone reports that the studio announced that Spike Lee will helm the remake/reinterpretation after a screenplay by Mark Protosevich (The Cell, I am Legend, Thor) with yet unnamed actors.

This morning/last night, K2DVD added some new Korean Blu-ray Disc releases to their site. According to these listings, CJ Entertainment will bring us The King and the Clown, Green Fish and Arahan while a still unnamed label will release Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy and Untold Scandal. There are no release dates mentioned, but all discs are supposed to come with English subtitles.

And talking of Chan-Wook Park’s vengeance trilogy: Rick Stelow, director of marketing at Palisades-Tartan USA has just informed me that the already announced Vengeance Trilogy Blu-ray Disc Box including Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, OldBoy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance will be released on March 16th as a Best Buy exclusive in a limited edition tin packaging. Other retailers will have to wait until June 15th and will only get the standard slipcase packaging. As a consolation for all the bummed importers, I’ve listed the bonus features of the box set below.

Region A fans of Chan-wook Park rejoice! Palisades-Tartan announced in their newsletter to release the Korean director’s Vengeance Trilogy consisting of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, OldBoy and (Sympathy for) Lady Vengeance in North America in March 2010 on Blu-ray Disc together with its DVD counterpart! While OldBoy has been available on Region A Blu-ray Disc for some time now, the other two parts of the amazing trilogy just got released as Region B locked in the UK.

Blarg! Latino Review exclusively reports that Stephen Spielberg and Will Smith’s adaptation of OldBoy (not based on Chan-wook Park’s 20003 film, but the original Japanese manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi according to Smith) has been canned.
The report doesn’t mention specific reasons, but I guess the licensing problems that appeared last month could have something to do with it. While this may be great news for fans of Park’s amazing adaptation, I don’t think this was Hollywood’s last try to bring this story to the big screen itself.

/film berichtet, daß Mark Protosevich für das Drehbuch des Smithbergschen OldBoy Remakes im Gespräch ist. Zu seinen bisherigen Arbeiten zählen unter anderem die Skripte von The Cell, Poseidon und I am Legend.

Auch beim Remake von Joon-ho Bongs Monsterdrama The Host tut sich einiges. Laut Variety wird sich Produzent Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean Reihe) bei Universal dem Werk annehmen. Für die Regie wurde Werbe- und Musikvideoregisseur Fredrik Bond verpflichtet, der das Drehbuch von Mark Poirier entsprechend umsetzen soll.

Oh my, das Castkarussell von Hollywoods unvermeidlichen Remake von Chan-wook Park’s OldBoy bzw. der japanischen Mangavorlage von Garon Tsuchiya rotiert mal wieder heftig. Während in der Vergangenheit stets von einer Kooperation von Justin Lin und Nicolas Cage (der hier köstlicherweise sein eigenes Overacting präsentiert bekommt) gemunkelt wurde, berichtet Variety nun, daß Stephen Spielberg sich dem Titel annimmt, Will Smith die Hauptrolle übernehmen soll und aktuell ein Drehbuchautor gesucht wird.
Einen längeren Kommentar dazu erspare ich mir an dieser Stelle mal. Ich halte Spielberg und Smith für sehr talentierte Künstler, aber Hollywood und eine werkgetreue Umsetzung von OldBoy passen meiner Meinung nach einfach nicht zusammen.

Das in Großbritanien beheimatete Label Tartan Video hat heute bekannt gegeben, ab Ende August erste Titel im Blu-ray Format zu veröffentlichen. Am 27. August sollen Paul Verhoevens Black Book [IMDb] und der Ingmar Bergmann Klassiker The Seventh Seal [IMDb] erscheinen. Einen Monat später soll OldBoy [IMDb] als Blu-ray Premiere (eine japanische HD DVD ohne englische UT gibt es bereits) veröffentlicht werden. Der offizielle Pressekrams dazu:

All three releases are worldwide Blu-ray premieres, the format with broader industry support, a picture quality six times that of current DVDs, and fully uncompressed audio all set to increase consumers’ viewing pleasure beyond their wildest expectations.

Tartan Video’s owner and self-professed early adopter, Hamish McAlpine, says, “To go with Blu-ray was a no-brainer for Tartan. Not only is the format superior to HD-DVD, but also the fact that 7 out of 8 studios have chosen to release their films on Blu-ray means that this so-called ‘format war’ is over before it has really begun.”

In an exciting move, Tartan Video’s Blu-ray releases will be uniquely packaged with the DVD edition of each film to allow consumers who have yet to invest in Blu-ray technology the opportunity to enjoy the films on existing players at no additional cost as they invest for the future.

Naja, ob der Formatkrieg schon vorrüber ist, wird man in den nächsten Monaten wohl noch sehen. Das Beipacken der DVD Version (ebenso wie die unsäglichen Combodiscs von Warner) halte ich persönlich für Schwachsinn, wer den Preis für ein HD-Medium zahlt, dürfte nur noch wenig Interesse an einer Ausgabe des Film in Standardauflösung haben und will sicherlich keinen Aufpreis dafür zahlen. Und Leute, die noch nicht umgestiegen sind, werden den Teufel tun und den doppelten Preis für einen Titel auf einem Medium, für den sie kein Abspielgerät besitzen, bezahlen. Ich hoffe Tartan reißt sich wenigstens am Riemen und veröffentlicht die Titel ohne Regionalcode, OldBoy würde ich mir nämlich doch gerne in HD Auflösung zulegen.

DVDfromKorea hat die ersten zwei Bilder zu Park Chan Wook’s Vengeance Trilogy Boxset veröffentlicht. Das Set soll am 14. Juli erscheinen und enthält die drei hervorragenden Filme Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy sowie Sympathy for Lady Vengeance inkl. Extras auf sieben DVDs. Englische Untertitel sind aufgelistet, ob das auch für die Extras gilt und ob die Scheiben selbst überarbeitet wurden, ist bisher nicht bekannt, ist aber aufgrund der gelisteten Extras und Tonspuren eher nicht zu erwarten.

Sieht bisher nicht sonderlich beeindruckend oder stabil aus, nach der koreanischen Oldboy Ultimate Edition und dem britischen Vengeance Trilogy Boxset hätte ich da ehrlich gesagt ein bisschen mehr für eine solche Sammlung erwartet. Der Händler MadMad.co.kr hat leider noch keine Bilder, dürfte aber nicht mehr lange dauern, bis man mehr vom Boxset zu sehen bekommt.

Das bisher schönste Erlebnis der diesjährigen WM im eigenen Lande…in allen deutschen Kneipen läuft gerade auf ARD OldBoy weil die Wirte zu faul sind umzuschalten!
