AKIRA: UK Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combi Steelbook [Update]

Manga Entertainment UK just tweeted a high resolution product shot for the UK Blu-ray Disc release of Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA.
The BD/DVD combi will hit the shelves in a nice steelbook package (probably because the Brits had to wait so long for their ‘own’ release) for a limited time on June 27th. I guess the BD itself will be the same as the one in the amazing US and Japanese release that I told you about maaaany times before…

Hughes Brothers to direct Live-Action Akira?

Vulture exclusively reports that the Hughes Brothers, Albert and Allen (The Book of Eli, From Hell, Menace II Society) are currently in negotiations to direct Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s manga Akira. As previously reported in September 2009, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are supposed to turn the six manga volumes into scripts for two films that will probably open in 2011. An official announcement is expected later this week.

Akira Live-Action Adaption Script from Iron Man & Children of Men Writers?

Just a quick update from the oh so active rumor mill for Warner’s live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira. According to Collider, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are currently working hard on the script for Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way. Both of them were responsible for the scripts of Children of Men and Iron Man (at least parts of it) so we can at least hope that Akira won’t suffer the same ill fate as some other recent manga adaptations…
Production is now supposed to start in 2010 with a theatrical release a year later.

Akira Live-Action Still a Go?

Welcome to another ride in the Akira rumor carousel! After the live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira manga has been declared dead back in June, Japanator reports that Warner is indeed still actively working on the script.
At least this is what producer Andrew Lazar let slip during the Comic Con panel for the comic adaptation Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox.

Viva Neo-Manhattan! Live-action Akira Canned?

Neo-Manhattan is about to EXPLO…eeeeh or is it? Bloody Disgusting reports that Warner Bros’ planned live action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira is “dead as a doornail” and even supposed Irish director Ruairí Robinson is said to have left the project.
The two-part adaptation financed by Leonardo DiCaprios Appian Way was supposed to open this summer.
To be honest, I was kinda curious about what a director like Robinson would have made of the cult classic manga source. My suggestion to the Japanese right owner: use Warner’s money for full fledged anime-adaptation of all six manga volumes with at least 52 episodes…
