Well, great news for Ghost in the Shell fans who don’t want to import expensive Blu-ray Discs from Japan! A few days after the announcement, that the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex movies The Laughing Man, Individual Eleven and Solid State Society will be released in Japan on Blu-ray Disc as individual releases, Right Stuf added the US Blu-ray Disc versions for all three films to their catalogue. Distributed by Manga Entertainment and authored by Bandai Entertainment, the discs are supposed to hit US stores with English subtitles and dub on December 7th.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Movies on Blu-ray Disc

A few days ago, Bandai announced to release the three Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex movies, which are currently only ‘available’ in a ugly, expensive and out of print Blu-ray Disc boxset, as individual Blu-ray Discs.
The Laughing Man, Individual Eleven (compilation of the first two seasons/GIGS) and the sequel Solid State Society will hit the Japanese stores just in time for Christmas, on December 22nd. Just like in the box set, the individual releases will include English subtitles and the English dub.

Talking of Stand Alone Complex, Manga Entertainment UK made some statements on Twitter regarding an European Blu-ray Disc release of the series. According to them, the Japanese companys won’t allow complete Blu-ray Disc box sets to be released outside of Japan, so Manga would have to release the series on individual volumes with about four episodes…

Laeta Kalogridis Talks Live-Action Ghost in the Shell

During a promotion event for Shutter Island, the colleagues from Screen Rant and MoviesOnline.ca had the chance to talk with script writer Laeta Kalogridis about the current status of her script for the Ghost in the Shell live-action adaptation:

Q: Is that a remake of the 1995 film or is that an adaptation of the earlier manga?
LK: “Ghost in the Shell” was originally the manga. The anime came from the original graphic novel and then — and that anime, as you know, is a relatively famous, groundbreaking piece of material — also generated two seasons of an animated television show as well. And this is an adaptation of the original manga, the original comic book that sort of began everything.

Kalogridis told me that the script for Ghost In The Shell will be drawn from Masamune’s manga comic and that it has “a lot of action… lots of action.” However, she then added, “there’s still going to be a lot of atmosphere – [The movie] is about vast possibilities – all of this technology, the Internet – it’s about the limitless possibilities of this technology.”

Putting aside the usal reserverations against Hollywood adaptations, I’m glad they decided to use Masamune Shirow’s original manga as a source as it includes some great plot points that haven’t been touched in Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film and only found some mentioning in the Stand Alone Complex seasons.

3D Live-Action Ghost in the Shell gets screenwriter

ComingSoon.net reports that Dreamworks Pictures has hired Laeta Kalogridis as the screenwriter for the 3D live-action adaptation of Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell that has been floating around the net for quite some time now. Until now, (im at least in April 2008), Jamie Moss (Street Kings) was supposed to write the script for Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul’s Seaside Entertainment.
Well, color me unimpressed. For the live-action adaptation of Akira, Warner got Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (who wrote the screenplay for Children of Men) so there is a bit of hope for that, but looking at Kalogridis’ career so far (Alexander, Night Watch, Pathfinder) I just can’t see how she’s supposed to properly transfer the Ghost in the Shell universe into the reel (eh) world.

Wheee, a Mamoru Oshii Hattrick! After two clips, Manga Entertainment released a full trailer for the upcoming (October 26th) UK DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Ghost in the Shell 2.0.
It features a nice selection of “old and new” scenes, but they should get rid of the guy (is this the English voice of Batou?) who did the terrible voice over…

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 UK Blu-ray Disc includes 1995 Original Version

Sometimes it really pays off to re-read updated posts.
DVD Times has updated one of its posts regarding Manga Entertainments upcoming UK Blu-ray Disc release of Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell 2.0 with the little fact that the original 1995 version (’1.0′) will be included on the same disc that will hit the shelves October 26th! However, according to this comment the picture quality of the original is nothing to write home about:

The original movie is on the Blu-ray and is in HD, but it’s 1080i and has to be the worst transfer I’ve ever seen on Blu-ray. The source looks like a VHS tape.

I _guess_ Manga Entertainment used of their own transfers for this instead of using the Japanese 1.0 Blu-ray Disc, probably because of legal reasons.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0: US Blu-ray Disc in November

After a few early announcements with only vage time frames, a proper release date for the US Blu-ray Disc release of Ghost in the Shell 2.0 has been announced.
According to RightStuf.com, Manga Entertainment will release the “improved” 2.0 version of Mamoru Oshii’s anime classic on November 24th, a month after the delayed UK Blu-ray Disc release and almost a year after the neat Japanese one.

Moe Master muhootsaver has found the probably first full resolutions screenshots taken from the Japanese Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Blu-ray Disc release.
Sadly the picture quality isn’t quite what I expected and this looks look more like an upscale than a proper HD transfer.

With the PQ being like this, I guess it isn’t such a tragedy that the box sets don’t include English subtitles after all…

Bandai Visual has released the first pictures of the first (of four) Blu-ray Disc collections for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Blu-ray Disc Box that just break my poor little tachikoma-loving heart.
While the last Blu-ray Disc collection with the Laughing Man and Individual Eleven compilation movies, and Solid State Society was pretty much ugly as hell but included English subtitles, this one (coming from Honneamise on August 29th) would actually look great in my (and probably everone’s) collection but sadly won’t include English subtitles.
Oddly enough the English dub will be included (even if it’s only in lossy DD 5.1) again, so the sad lack of subtitles probably isn’t because of the usual licensee hullabaloo but because BV hates me and doesn’t want my money…

Production I.G teases us with third Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Season (3rd GIG)

mmh, sometimes it really pays off to read the entire news entry and follow the links within. The ANN entry on the Jin-Roh live-action adaptation (some of you might remember it) leads to their complete report of the Production I.G panel on Anime Expo 2009 where the following paragraph gives some hope to all Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex fans and tachikoma lovers:

During the question and answer session, one fan asked about the possibility of a third season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Terashima-Furuta answered that she expects the project to happen, but that the director is currently tied up in other projects.

I hope those other projects are the two follow-up movies for Eden of the East so director Kenji Kamiyama can get back to the Ghost in the Shell universe ASAP!

More Details on the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Blu-ray Disc Box Sets [Update]

AV Watch has some new details on mysterious Japanese Blu-ray Disc release for the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series. Just as expected, it’s actually not a single disc release, but a box set that includes the first 13 episodes of the series’ first season (1st GIG) on the three discs. The second box with the rest of the season will be released on September 25, 2009. The two box sets for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG will be released on November 25 and Dezember 22, 2009.
According to Bandai Visual product pages (1-2-3-4), all box sets will have a 5.1 DD English dub track, at the moment it’s unclear if English subtitles will be included as well. Google translates a passage from the pages with “Japanese with subtitles (ON OFF possible)”, I hope this means English subtitles like on the SAC compilation movies + Solid State Society release. The original Japanese track is available in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and PCM stereo. Like some other tv series on BD, the episodes will be encoded in 1080i.
Update: Bandai Visual has updated its Ghost in the Shell website with further information on the BD box set and makes it quite clear that they will only have Japanese subtitles! Guess I have to spend the 500€ elsewhere…

More Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on Blu-ray Disc

Japanese online retailer Rakuta lists a new release related to the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime series. The item description “Disc 1″ in combination with the price of about 120€ suggests that this is the first of an unknown number of boxsets for the whole Stand Alone Complex series.
The compilation movies The Laughing Man (Season 1) and Individual Eleven (Season/GIG 2) as well as the sequel Solid State Society have been released in a Japanese Blu-ray Disc boxset (ABDG) with English subtitles and English audio tracks in July 2008.
Hopefully the freshly announced release by Bandai Visual will be this English friendly as well when it gets released on August 25, 2009. I’ll keep you guys updated on this.

Masamune Shirow joins the SQUAD

During this year’s Tokyo International Anime Fair, the recently founded production studio Lucent Pictures Entertainment has announced it’s new anime project called Squad. The most interesting fact about this is the name Masamune Shirow that’s getting mentioned under the tagline “A battle for the front mission — I’ll cover your back.”. Masamune Shirow is the creator of classics like Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed.
Except for the teaser artwork to the left that looks more like a video game scene than a scene from an anime, no details have been revealed.

Ghost in the Shell on Blu-ray Overkill for Region B

And another bunch of good news for us in region B, this time for one of my favourite topic: Ghost in the Shell. So far, all Blu-ray Disc releases of the anime classic have been useless for us because of that nasty region encoding Bandai and Buena Vista used on them. But now, finally, the Jersey based retailer play.com (yes, them again) has listed releases of the reworked Ghost in the Shell 2.0 and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence for an ~~August 3rd, 2009~~ September 7, 2009 by Manga Entertainment UK!
Hopefully Innocence won’t have the same ‘features’ (only lossy audio, pitch problems with one of the English dubs) as Bandai’s recent US release. Please Manga, don’t make the Tachikomas cry…

Ghost in the Shell 2.0: US Blu-ray Disc release in autumn

A quick update on the long promised US Blu-ray Disc release of Ghost in the Shell. IVC2 reports that Anchor Bay will release the new 2.0 version of the classic on Blu-ray Disc in “August or September”. So those of you who don’t want to import the infamous Japanese Blu-ray Disc set have to be patient a bit longer.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Kurzreview und Bilder vom japanischen Limited Edition Boxset

Nachdem ich schon so viele Worte über die Blu-ray Disc Veröffentlichung von Mamoru Oshiis Ghost in the Shell 2.0 Aufguss verloren habe, gibt es jetzt ein paar Bilder vom heute frisch eingetroffenen japanischen Boxset.
Das Set enthält drei Blu-ray Disc mit der ursprünglichen (identisch mit der bereits 2007 veröffentlichten Blu-ray) und der neuen 2.0 Fassung des Animeklassikers sowie einem rund 50 Minuten langen Making-of (Reborn getauft und ohne Untertiel). Alle drei Blu-rays sind regionfree und laufen auf europäischen Playern. Auf der Bonus CD befindet sich leider nicht wie erhofft der komplette (neue) Soundtrack, sondern lediglich eine sogenannte Sound Collage die aus fünf neu abgemischten Titeln und vier Dialogsequenzen besteht. Als weitere Beilage gibt es noch ein 24-seitiges Booklet mit Konzeptzeichnungen und natürlich japanischen Texten die sich mit der Neufassung von GitS befassen. Alles findet in einem stabilen Glanzschuber Platz, bei dem der Titelschriftzug vorne und die Credits hinten in silber aufgedruckt sind.

Ich hatte heute leider keine Zeit für einen kompletten Durchlauf, aber bei der ersten Sichtung fielen die neuen bzw. überarbeiteten Szene schon stark auf. Nicht nur beim berühtem Hochhaussprung, sondern auch bei der Tauchszene wurde ‘Major’ Motoko Kusanagi komplett durch ein 3D Modell ersetzt das von der Qualität etwa denen bei Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children verwendeten Modellen entspricht. Die Introsequenz zeigt zwar immernoch Making of a Cyborg, jedoch wurden auch hier die klassischen Computergrafiken (inklusive dem Ghost in the Shell Logo mit Klappercredits) durch moderne 3D Versionen ersetzt und die Farbpalette von grün auf orange geändert.
Während es beim der neu abgemischten 6.1 Tonspur nichts zu meckern gibt, kann die Bildqualität der 2.0 Version leider nicht ganz überzeugen. Da fast im ganzen Film neue Beleuchtungs- und Bloomeffekte (siehe Screenshots) über das Originalbild gelegt wurde, fällt nicht nur im direkten Vergleich auf, daß viele feinen Details der ursprünglichen Zeichnungen untergehen bzw. beim Versuch Tiefenschärfe zu erzeugen einfach weichgezeichnet wurden. Der Film wirkt damit zwar frischer und erinnert mehr an heutige Produktionen, verliert aber in meinen Augen einen Teil seines ursprünglichen Charms. Ein Urteil, welches denn meine endgültige Fassung des Films ist werde ich mir aber erst nach einer kompletten Sichtung machen.

Massig Screenshots (160 Stück!) gibt es drüben im Asian Blu-ray Guide, hier welche der Originalversion, hier der neuen 2.0 Fassung und hier im manchmal nicht ganz framegenauen Direktvergleich. Bei allen Bildern ist aber zu sagen daß beide Versionen “in echt”, also zumindest bei mir auf der Leinwand deutlich besser aussehen als die Screenshots es vermuten lassen.

Englische Untertitel für japanische Ghost in the Shell 2.0 Blu-ray Disc bestätigt!

Tja, was soll ich bei dem Beitragstitel noch groß schreiben? Meine japanischen Spione haben mir zeitgleich mit der Versandbestätigung meines GitS 2.0 Boxsets bestätigt, daß die japanische Blu-ray Disc (Einzelveröffentlichung) nun tatsächlich englische Untertitel enthält. Der Sachverhalt war seit der Ankündigung durch Bandai etwas unklar, da in der ersten Presseveröffentlichung explizit angemerkt wurde, daß die Blu-ray Disc keine englischen Untertitel haben wird, was jedoch später auf den Produktseiten von Bandai selbst und auf einigen Händlerseiten widerlegt wurde.
So ganz habe ich dem ganzen hin und her jedoch nicht getraut und freue mich jetzt um so mehr daß ich die Kohle nicht in den Sand gesetzt habe und mich hoffentlich noch vor Weihnachten auf Ghost in the Shell (egal in welcher Fassung) in HD erleben darf. Fotos vom Boxset und HD Screenshots beider Versionen gibt es dann hier bzw. im Asian Blu-ray Guide zu bewundern.
Update: Mein 2.0 Boxset ist gerade angekommen und ich kann die englischen Untertitel und Freiheit von sämtlichen Regionalcodes für beide Versionen bestätigen, nur die Blu-ray mit einem rund 40 Minuten langen Making of ist untertitellos. Fotos und Screenshots gibt es heute Abend.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Japanische Veröffentlichungen nun doch mit englischen Untertiteln

Gute Nachrichten für importfreudige Ghost in the Shell Fans. Während Bandai Visual in ihrer Pressemitteilung im August bemerkt hat, daß die im Dezember erscheinenden, japanischen DVD und Blu-ray Disc Veröffentlichungen von Mamoru Oshiis Ghost in the Shell 2.0 ohne englische Untertitel auskommen müssen, gibt es jetzt einen kleinen Lichtblick. Auf den Produkseiten der beiden Veröffentlichungen, also nur der einzelnen 2.0 Version sowie dem Boxset mit der alten 1.0 sowie der neuen 2.0 Version wird nun ein freundliches “Japanese with English subtitles (ON OFF)” vermerkt. Die Angabe passt nun auch zu den Spezifikationen, die Händler wie CD Japan, YesAsia und Amazon Japan bereits seit längerem aufführen.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Japanische Blu-ray Disc als Limited Edition

Bandai Visual hat die Spezifikationen zu den japanischen Blu-ray Disc Editionen der Ghost in the Shell Neufassung 2.0 veröffentlicht. Am 19. Dezember erscheint Ghost in the Shell 2.0 zusammen mit der Orginalfassung (1.0?) auf zwei Blu-ray Discs in einer Limited Edition, die zusätzlich den Soundtrack auf Audio CD, einer Bonus DVD sowie ein Booklet enthält. Bei der Blu-ray Disc des Originals von 1995 handelt es sich um die bereits im Handel erhältliche Fassung, also nix mit verbessertem Bild. Je nach Shop wird die LE in verschiedenen Covervarianten angeboten. Wer das Original bereits im Schrank stehen hat (oder erstmal auf eine bessere Version warten will), kann die 2.0 Version auch als Einzelvariante kaufen, dann allerdings ohne Soundtrack und Bonus DVD. Komplett abschminken können wir uns leider englische Untertitel bei der 2.0 Neufassung, dürfte wohl daran liegen daß die US Rechte bereits anderweitig verscherbelt wurden
Wirklich schade, gerade zur Vorweihnachtszeit hätte ich gerne mal wieder unvernünftig viel Geld (UVP ~80€) für ein nettes japanisches Sammlerstück ausgegeben, aber so müssen wir wohl warten und hoffen, daß Manga den US Markt bald mit einer untertitelten Version beglückt.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Erste Eindrücke

Leider nur aus zweiter Hand, da ich hier fest stecke, während sich die Herren von destroy tokyo in eben jener Metropole aufhalten und von einer der ersten Ghost in the Shell 2.0 Vorstellung berichten können:

[...]Other changes include getting rid of the original credits (which would later inspire the Matrix’s “digital rain” effects) and replacing every helicopter in the film with a 3D model.
[...]The worst change is the coloring changes throughout the film. The original version was a very green movie; every computer display and almost every shot had a green hue. They’ve now adjusted it so that everything is red-orange, seemingly for no other reason than to be different. For most of the film, this color shift is the only visible change but it’s a considerable one.
Otherwise, it’s the same movie. I didn’t notice any scenes that had been cut and the “new” scenes are basically identical, just redone in 3D.

Also alles nichts weltbewegendes oder gar notwendiges, sondern eher ein Mittel um Oshii und damit The Sky Crawlers mehr ins Rampenlicht zu rücken.
Heute wurde übrigens auch eine DVD und Blu-ray Disc Auswertung der 2.0 Version für kommenden Winter bei AV Watch angekündigt, vielleicht schafft man es ja beide Versionen auf die Datenträger zu bringen.

CD Japan gewährt einen ersten auf den Inhalt der leider in meinen Augen absolut grässlichen gestalteten japanischen Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Trilogy Blu-ray Box, die am 25. Juli erscheint und mich bei wohlgesonnenen Reviews vielleicht doch noch überzeugen und im Regal landen könnte. Bei Ghost in the Shell Krams kann ich halt nicht widerstehen…

Zur Abwechslung mal ein paar Neuigkeiten von der heute endenden Anime Expo 2008. ANN berichtet, daß auf dem Production I.G Panel Pläne für die US Veröffentlichung von Ghost in the Shell 2.0 bekannt gegeben wurden. Demnach soll Manga Entertainment die US Rechte ergattert haben und will auf der am 23. Juli in San Diego stattfindenden Comic Con weitere Details bekannt geben. Vielleicht tut sich Manga Entertainment ja wieder mit Bandai Entertainment zusammen und schiebt der angekündigten Innocence Blu-ray Disc eine ordentliche Veröffentlichung der neuen GitS Version nach.

Insgesamt also nichts neues, bis auf die neue Tachikoma Days Episode nichts, was nicht schon auf den bereits veröffentlichten US DVDs (in Klammern) vorhanden ist. Aktuell ist die Box für rund 130€ gelistet, eigentlich kein übler Preis für einen GitS Fanatiker, allerdings ist das grottige Design der Box eine absolute Schande für die Serie. Vor allem wenn man sich die heißen japanischen (links, mittig) und koreanischen (rechts) DVD Komplettboxen anschaut könnten einem echt die Tränen kommen.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Trailer, Poster und Vergleichsbilder

Passend zum gestrigen Newtype Bericht über Ghost in the Shell 2.0 gibt es heute bereits den ersten Promo Trailer, in dem bereits einige der neuen CG Szenen (unter anderem der Hochhaussturz) gezeigt werden. Bin mal gespannt wie die ‘neuen’ Szenen im endgültigen Film ausschauen werden. Motoko Kusanagi in 3D gab es ja bereits im Vorspann der ersten Stand Alone Complex Staffel zu sehen, da wirkte das ganze allerdings etwas hölzern.

Ebenfalls frisch sind die drei Bilder unten, welche die Unterschiede zwischen der 1995er und der 2008er Version besser zeigen als der abgescannte Newtype Artikel, sowie das erste Postermotiv.

Following yesterdays Newtype article, the first promo trailer for the new version of Ghost in the Shell has hit the net and it includes some of the new CG shots (including the famous skyscraper jumping scene).The three comparison shots right under the trailer show some of the changes that have been made to the original 1995 version of the film. Here’s a first look at the new poster art.
Ghost in the Shell 2.0 will include new visual effects, a new dubbing (the Puppet Master’s seiyuu has been replaced) and a rerecorded 6.1 soundtrack. It will be shown in selected Japanese cinemas starting July, 12.

Oh my, Mamoru Oshiis Meisterwerk Ghost in the Shell wird im kommenden Monat offenbar ein ähnliches Schicksal widerfahren wie der Neon Genesis Evangelion TV Serie. Wie Manganimation.net berichtet wird der Klassiker von 1995 ab dem 12. Juli unter dem Namen Ghost in the Shell 2.0 erneut in ausgewählte Kinos in fünf japanischen Städten gebracht und musste sich dafür einer Verjüngungskur unterziehen. So wurden einige CG Sequenzen neu animiert und auch der Soundtrack sowie die Dialoge wurden im 6.1 Kanalton neu aufgenommen, dabei wurde die Rolle des Puppet Master neu besetzt. Über weitere Änderungen oder inwiefern Oshii an der ‘Redux’ Fassung beteiligt war, ist noch nichts bekannt.
