So langsam schwappt die Formatwechselwelle nun auch über Deutschland hinweg. Heute hat Constantin Film angekündigt seinen neutralen Stand in Sachen HD Formate aufzugeben und ab dem 1. März seine Titel nur noch auf Blu-ray Disc sowie natürlich DVD zu veröffentlichen. Die komplette Pressemeldung gibt es bei golem. Bisher hatte sich Constantin Film mit seinen HD Veröffentlichungen in Sachen Bildqualität und “Produktionsfehlern” ja nicht gerade mit Ruhm bekleckert, mal schauen was nach dieser Entscheidung kommt.

Während bei manchen Studios noch heftig spekuliert und nach Hinweisen von namenlosen Insidern berichtet wird, hat sich das US Pornolabel Digital Playground laut Engadget HD heute exklusiv zum Blu-ray Disc Format bekannt. Hochkarätige Titel wie Island Fever 3 & 4, Babysitters, Jack’s Teen America 3, Jesse Jane: Sexual Freak, Hush, Contract Star und Jesse Jane Pink werden demnach ab Februar nicht mehr im HD DVD Format erscheinen. Nachdem Warner Bros gestern überraschend seine Umstieg auf das Blu-ray Disc Format bekannt gegeben hat, schließt sich laut einem Variety Bericht auch das Halbschwesterlabel New Line Home Entertainment dem blauen HD Lager an. New Line hatte erst im Juli verkündet, Titel auf beiden HD Formaten zu veröffentlichen und hat anschließend bei mir persönlich ein etwas unbehagliches Gefühl mit der Meldung hervorgerufen seine neueren Titel auf Blu-ray mit einem Regionalcode zu “schützen” und die HD DVD Veröffentlichungen später auf den Markt zu bringen. Trauriges Beispiel dafür ist Shoot ‘em Up.
Da sich die Studios ja nun geeinigt haben, könnten sie jetzt langsam mal anfangen die wirklichen Knallertitel wie etwa die Herr der Ringe Trilogie auf dem Siegerformat zu veröffentlichen, oder?

[09.01.08] Update: Laut Highdefdigest.com daß es beim New Line Wechsel keine “Schonfrist” geben wird, sondern neue Titel ab sofort (also jetze!) nur noch auf Blu-ray Disc erscheinen werden. Pan’s Labyrinth wird also der erste und einzige Titel für das Format bleiben, die Rush Hour 3 und Hairspray HD DVDs werden eingestampft…najo

Die Reuters Agentur meldet aktuell, daß das Warner Bros Studio seine bisherige Formatneutralität aufgeben und ab Ende Mai ihre Titel nur noch auf DVD sowie Blu-ray Disc veröffentlichen wird.

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp’s Blu-ray format, dealing a big blow to Toshiba Corp’s rival HD DVD technology.

Warner Bros, Hollywood’s biggest seller of DVDs, representing about 18 to 20 percent of sales in the United States, was one of the few studios that backed both formats.

All sides of the format war had agreed it was confusing to consumers and a stumbling block for a potential multibillion-dollar industry.

“The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers,” Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.

Oha, das ist wirklich ein dicker Brummer vor der am Montag in Las Vegas startenden Consumer Electronics Show (CES), bei der Warner Home Video laut Zeitplan sogar noch einen Auftritt bei der HD DVD Promotion Group plant. Ich denke mal die können sich da auf ordentlich Gegenwind gefasst machen
Hoffentlich bleibt Warner zumindest seiner Linie treu und veröffentlicht seine Titel weltweit weiterhin ohne störenden Blu-ray Regionalcode.

[Update] Inzwischen gibt es aus dem Hause Warner eine offizielle Pressemeldung, die das ganze bestätigt.

Nachdem Michael Bay kurz nach der Bekanntgabe von Paramount, exklusiv das HD DVD Format zu unterstützen in seinem “shoot for the edit” Forum schon einmal gegen das Studio und das Format gewettert hatte, nur um kurze Zeit später wieder zurück zu rudern, hat sich der Power Director jetzt erneut zum Formatkrieg geäußert:

Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth.

Aha, “dirty secret” also. Nur schön, daß die Blu-ray Fanboys genau diese Worte schon seit Beginn der Formatschlacht von den Forenbäumen brüllen, jedes mal wenn ein Studio es wagt sich zum HD DVD Format zu bekennen und damit den Untergang der HD Medien heraufbeschwören. Von daher sollte sich Bay mal lieber aufs Filmemachen konzentrieren anstatt sich in die Vertriebspolitik der Studios einzumischen, mit albernen Boykotten (“No Transformers 2!!1!!!!”) zu drohen und die hirnrissigen FUD Argumente der Fanboys nachzuplappern

But that said – I don’t a care about this format war because I have both formats in my screening room – I’m just filling you in on what people deep in the film industry feel ultimately is going on -

Brilliant recherchierte Reportage vom Planetopia Magazin, die gestern Abend auf Sat. 1 gezeigt wurde.

Schon clever zu erläutern, wo die Daten auf HD DVD und Blu-ray gespeichert werden aber mit keinem Wort die Vor- und Nachteile der beiden Formate zu erwähnen oder ein Format zum “eigenen” Sieger zu erklären weil ein Player 100€ günstiger ist. Ich frag mich auch, was das für eine geheimnisvolle Spielekonsole ist, deren Name da nicht genannt werden darf…
