British retailer Amazon.co.uk is currently having a small sale that includes several anime films and series on Blu-ray Disc. The best bargain in the sale is Shigurui (Death Frenzy) The Complete Series for £6,49 (~7,20€), that is identical (except for the packaging) with FUNimation’s US release (screen shots are available in the Asian Blu-ray Guide) I bought a year ago for a lot more and still haven’t seen yet…
For less that £10 you can also get Blood – The Last Vampire (£7,85), Afro Samurai S1 (£5,00), Afro Samurai – Resurrection (£7,85), Origin: Spirits Of The Past (£8,00), Final Fantasy VII – Advent Children (£9,45), Paprika (£7,97) and Tekkonkinkreet (£6,98) (a must-have!). For a few quids more there are also the complete Devil May Cry Series (£11,85) and the Ghost in the Shell 2.0 + Innocence box (£17,85).

Bargain time for all you cinephiles out there! Amazon.com has started a Criterion Collection sale with DVDs from $13.99 and Blu-ray Discs from $15.99. The sale includes 29 titles including Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and Kagemusha, Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal and the controversial Japanese thriller In the Realm of the Senses (Ai no corrida). European buyers should note that Criterion has so far region coded all their releases to Region A, so bad luck for most of us…

Everyone else may be happy to read that Amazon.com has reduced the prices of several Criterion Collection Blu-ray Disc releases down to $19.99! The sale includes Wages of Fear, The Third Man, Chungking Express, The 400 Blows, In the Realm of Senses (Ai no corrida), The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Last Emperor.

Der japanische Versender CDJapan hat momentan die beiden Japan DVDs zu Quentin Tarantinos Zweiteiler Kill Bill zu einem (für japanische DVDs) sehr günstigen Preis von etwa 9,50€ pro Stück im Angebot.
Warum man sich die (ansonsten schweineteuren) japanische DVD eines US Films kaufen sollte? Nun, Mr. Tarantino war der Meinung, daß die Japaner besser mit blutigen Szenen umgehen können und hat deshalb speziell für den japanischen Markt eine andere Schnittversion des ersten Teils anfertigen lassen. So ist z.B. die geniale Kampfszene gegen die Crazy 88 Killers im japanischen Restaurant durchgehend in Farbe gehalten, während im Rest der Welt (wenn auch ziemlich stylisch) auf s/w umgeblendet wurde. Einen kompletten Schnittbericht mit Bildern und Zeitangaben gibt es hier. Im zweiten Teil wurden nur einige Dialogszenen geändert und etwas umgeschnitten, weitere Änderungen gibt es laut Schnittbericht nicht.
Die günstigste Versandvariante für eine DVD schlägt bei CDJapan mit etwa 3,30€ zu Buche. Beide DVDs besitzen den Regionalcode 2, laufen also auf allen europäischen Playern. Der Fernseher sollte allerdings das NTSC Signal darstellen können, das sollte aber bei Geräten die jünger als 6 Jahre alt sind kein Problem mehr sein.

Wem die normale DVD von Vol. 2 nicht reicht, kann bei YesAsia übrigens noch die Limited Edition zum Preis von 29€ bestellen. Wirklich ein schönes Teil, steht hier bei mir neben der Japan DVD von Vol. 1.
