Shochiku Entertainment has posted a new promo trailer for the upcoming (Japanese) DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Appleseed XIII: Yuigon, the first part of Production I.G.’s CG anime retelling of Masamune Shirow’s Appleseed manga in their YouTube channel.
International release dates haven’t been announced yet.

Synopsis:

Following a world war that killed half the world’s population, the city-nation of Olympus stands as a beacon of hope in a world of chaos and conflict. The utopian metropolis is governed by Gaia, a vast artificial intelligence, and administered by a genetically engineered humanoids known as Bioroids.

Although Olympus seems like a peaceful city on the surface, racial (human vs. bioroids vs. cyborgs), religious, and political conflicts lurk underneath — threatening to overturn the delicately balanced “peace”. Security threats such as terrorists and anti-government criminals abound, so the use of force becomes a necessary evil even in this so-called utopia.

Deunan, a young female warrior, and Briareos, a veteran cyborg-soldier, are both partners and lovers, as well as members of ES.W.A.T., the elite special forces serving Olympus. They are deployed wherever trouble strikes.

Conspiracy, terrorism, deadly military weapons technology, greedy corporations, and power-hungry politicians — these are just some of the threats that Deunan and Briareos must contend with as they fight to protect Olympus and save mankind from plunging into another war.

The official website for the Appleseed XIII CG anime project has been updated with a first trailer plus the theatrical and home video release plans last weekend.
Appleseed XIII: Yuigon, the first half of the retelling of Masamune Shirow’s manga will hit selected Japanese theaters on June 13th and will also available as a limited Blu-ray Disc edition in these theaters. The second part, Appleseed XIII: Yogen will open on October 24th.
If you can’t be bothered to leave your house, you can get the first volume with three episodes on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on July 6th or just stream the episodes to your (Japanese) home.

Looks like you just can’t keep Appleseed down. Two years after the Appleseed Genesis TV project has been declared dead, ANN reports that there will be another try to (re)animate Masamune Shirow’s manga. Appleseed XIII is supposed to adapt the manga in 13 22-minute OVA episodes and two compilation films. Production I.G and Jinni’s Animation Studios will produce the episodes which will be available next Spring. A first promotion image and a synopsis was released during TIFFCOM:

During this year’s Tokyo International Anime Fair, the recently founded production studio Lucent Pictures Entertainment has announced it’s new anime project called Squad. The most interesting fact about this is the name Masamune Shirow that’s getting mentioned under the tagline “A battle for the front mission — I’ll cover your back.”. Masamune Shirow is the creator of classics like Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed.
Except for the teaser artwork to the left that looks more like a video game scene than a scene from an anime, no details have been revealed.

ANN berichtet, daß das Animationsstudio Radix mobanimation die Produktionsfirma Micott & Basara wegen unterlassener Zahlungen verklagt hat. Radix sollte die im März angekündigte und Genesis getaufte CG Serienfortsetzung der Appleseed Reihe animieren, wurde für die bisher geleistete Arbeit nach eigenen Aussagen jedoch noch nicht (ausreichend) entlohnt. Zudem hatte Micott & Basara Anfang Juli die Produktion der Serie aus unbekannten Gründen gestoppt, ohne Radix die Gründe dafür vorzulegen.
Bis die beiden Streithähne sich geeinigt haben gibt es also nichts neues aus dem von Ghost in the Shell Schöpfer Masamune Shirow erdachten Appleseed Universum

Für alle die immer noch ratseln, welcher Reviewseite man denn nun Glauben schenken kann, wenn es um das Tonspurchaos bei der frisch erschienenen Appleseed Ex Machina Blu-ray Disc geht hier jetzt der Fotobeweis. Meine Scheibe wurde heute geliefert, Japanisch ist als 5.1 Spur vorhanden, die deutsche (leicht Porno-)Synchro im grandiosen Stereosound, deutsche Untertitel sind ebenfalls enthalten.

Heisei Democracy berichtet mit Verweis auf Moon Phase, daß zum CG Anime Appleseed von Ghost in the Shell Schöpfer Masamune Shirow eine TV Serie geplant ist. Die Appleseed Genesis getaufte Serie soll wie die beiden Vorgängerfilme komplett im Rechner entstehen, ob es sich dabei um die Umsetzung der bereits veröffentlichten Mangastorylines handelt oder um komplett neue Geschichten ist bisher nicht bekannt. Durchgesickert ist allerdings schon, daß Romanov Higa (Hellsing Ultimate, Urda: Third Reich, TANK S.W.A.T. 01) die Regie übernehmen soll. Mehr Details sollen bei der formellen Projektvorstellung am 30. März während der TIAF (Tokyo International Anime Fair) bekannt gegeben werden.

Chris Beveridge, Webmaster von Anime on DVD hat heute seine Blu-ray Disc und DVD Testexemplare von Appleseed Ex Machina von Warner zugeschickt bekommen und kann jetzt ein Ordnung in das, durch die von High-Def Digest veröffentlichten Spezifikationen verursachte Chaos bringen. Wie auf dem Coverscan von Chris zu sehen ist, wird die Blu-ray Disc Version den japanischen Originalton als 2.0 Stereospur enthalten und *trommelwirbel* sogar die deutsche (Stereo) Sprachvariante hat es auf die Scheibe geschafft. Auf der DVD wird allerdings keine deutsche Tonspur vorhanden sein.
Damit ist die Scheibe zumindest wieder auf meine “Kaufen-wenn-günstig” Liste gerutscht, Stereoton dürfte bei einem Film aus der Appleseed Reihe zwar etwas suboptimal sein, aber besser als garnichts. Die Asiatische Filme und Anime auf Blu-ray Disc Liste wurde natürlich entsprechend aktualisiert

[21:33 Uhr] Update: Mööööp, stoppt die Pressen! Chris hat es tatsächlich geschafft die Blu-ray Disc in den Player zu werfen und schreibt nun, daß die japanische Tonspur doch in 5.1 Dolby Digital vorliegt! Wegen der deutschen Tonspur habe ich nochmal angefragt, wer weiß was Warner sonst noch so versaut hat.

[23:04 Uhr] Update: Chris hat bestätigt, daß eine deutsche Stereotonspur vorhanden ist.

Während Appleseed Ex Machina rund drei Wochen vor der (leider offenbar nur synchronisierten) Blu-ray Disc und DVD Premiere auf der Wondercon 2008 in San Francisco dem interessierten Fanpublikum präsentiert wurde, zeigt IGN zwei frische Clips aus der CG Anime Fortsetzung.
