Matthew Santoro: 2010 Director’s Reel

We haven’t heard from his OFFLINE project for some time now, but this doesn’t stop director Matthew Santoro from showing off (supported by Nine Inch Nails’ The Mark Has Been Made) some very interesting looking material for the fresh year in this director’s promotion reel. Maybe we’ll even see some of his in a full length feature film soon?

Upcoming Blu-ray Discs from FUNimation in 2010

Speaking of FUNimation and Blu-ray Disc, here’s a scan of the insert that was included in the Evangelion 1.11 BD Special Edition. It promises some very interesting high definition (or probably just upscaled) releases of anime series like Eden of the East, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Casshern Sins for 2010 and beyond.

Thirst: Korean DVD to include longer Director’s Cut

Great news for fans of director Chan-wook Park’s teen angsty-less vampire drama Thirst (Bakjwi, 박쥐).
Today the Asian retailer YesAsia.com added the Korean 3-Disc DVD release (coming March 15, 2010) that will not only include the theatrical cut (that’s already available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc) but also the extended director’s cut with English subtitles. The latter was screened during last year’s Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) in October with about ten minutes of added and extended scenes.
Judging from the product photo, CJ Entertainment’s release should (as always) also put the packaging of the recent International releases to shame, especially since it features the “banned” artwork with Kim Ok-bin’s intact legs. If the already announced Korean Blu-ray Disc release will also include the Director’s cut is currently not known.

Kirsten Dunst as Akihabara Majokko Princess

Talk about Kirsten Dunst all you want, but she sure looks cute wandering around Tokyo’s entertainment and shopping district Akihabara dressed as a blue-haired cosplay fairy singing Turning Japanese by The Vapors (and flashing her panties for a split-second). This four minute video was produced and directored by Mr. Superflat Takashi Murakami and my special friend McG and is now available directly at Company 3.

I couldn’t find an easy way to embed the video, but here’s a direct link to the flash video file (~125MB) if the video won’t stream for you.Update: It’s now also available on Youtube, DailymotionVimeo…

Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is coming to Blu-ray Disc in Summer 2010!

wheeee! While I could just update the yesterday’s article regarding this topic, I thought that this piece of news just deserves its own little entry. During an HDTV broadcast of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind it was announced that Hayao Miyazaki’s 1984 masterpiece will be released on Blu-ray Disc in Japan this summer!
To give you a small hint of what at least to expect from those releases, check out these HD screenshots from the Joe Hisaishi in Budokan – Miyazaki Anime to Tomo ni Ayunda 25 Nenkan Blu-ray Disc. But I sure hope Disney Home Entertainment will use better source material for their upcoming releases.
