Studio Ghibli’s Next Film Karigurashi no Arrietty adapts Mary Norton’s The Borrowers

Just as reported last week, Ghibli announced the first details for the studios’s next theatrical feature today. Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty) will be (another) adaptation of Mary Norton’s novel The Borrowers. Set in the modern Tokyo neighborhood of Koganei (instead of 1950s England in the original), the borrowers are little people that are secretly living in the houses of the humans and “borrow” the things they need. The film centers on the 14-year-old borrower girl Arrietty (yes, another female hero in a Ghibli film) who’s living in the house of the human Clock family until she gets discovered by the family’s young boy.
The film will open in summer of 2010 and will be directed by 36-year-old animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi who has already worked on several Ghibli projects. The Japanese website for the film was also revealed today and it already shows us a small teaser artwork of Arrietty.

    Irgendwo habe die Geschichte der Borgers schon Mal gehört? :sclap:

    Klingt doch stark nach den Goblins, oder?

    Im Deutschen dürften das ne Mischung aus Heinzelmännchen und Kobolden sein, oder? :sclap:

    Stimmt war ja fast zeitgleich. ^^

    Das Motiv auf der Seite gefällt mir auf Anhieb schon gut.

    Ah, fein. Und wie angekündigt schicken sie jetzt die jüngere Generation vor, das ist wirklich bitter nötig, wenn man sich mal die Geburtsdaten von Miyazaki und Takahata anschaut. Bin sehr gespannt, ob Yonebayashi das Zeug dazu hat, die Nachfolge anzutreten. Spannend genug sieht das Projekt definitiv aus.

    Klingt eigentlich ganz cool wenn auch nicht so originell wie Ghibli einst war. Ich freu mich jedenfalls drauf. Besonders weil mich der Borgers-Realfilm nie interessiert hat. Bin mal gespannt ob es Ghibli schafft :)

    Macht mich persönlich irgendwie überhaupt nicht an, die Story ist bekannt und nicht sonderlich originell. Hätte eher auf etwas eigenständiges gehofft – Aber mal sehen was Ghibli daraus macht…
