Studio Ghibli HD/Blu-ray Disc Preview Screenshots
I just got my copy of the Japanese Joe Hisaishi in Budokan – Miyazaki Anime to Tomo ni Ayunda 25 Nenkan Blu-ray Disc that not only includes the incredible anniversary concert of Hayao Miyazaki’s favourite composer Joe Hisaishi but also a nice surprise for those of us who cry themselves to sleep every night because there’s still no Studio Ghibli film available on Blu-ray Disc.
The bonus feature consists of selection of music videos with scenes taken from some of Hayao Miyazaki’s masterworks (sadly not from Totoro, Laputa and Spirited Away) in HD quality! While these videos have been encoded in 1920×1080i and sometimes show compression artifacts and edge enhancement effects (especially Kiki), they are the closest thing to a Blu-ray Disc preview for Studio Ghibli films we currently have. So this is what we can at least expect quality wise for next year when the studio starts to release their catalog titles (Ponyo is supposed be the first in December).
Please note that the 100 (!) screenshots below (as always) contain spoilers and can’t show just how good these films look in motion, so do yourself a favour and buy the BD! ![]()

Wrong aspect ratios, edge enhancement, heavy cropping, gate weave that would give you motion sickness, and poor color timing are some of incompetence displayed in existing masters. They haven’t even had a direct digital transfer despite all their films being digital for 10 years. The masters they’ve used are from ancient times.
I don’t want the grain, cel shadows, or cel dust removed, but they still need to be carefully remastered from the best elements possible. Time is slowly taking these films away from us. And no one in charge seems to understand or care.

The first real Blu RAy scan was done for Ponyo, i hope they don’t dump the old dvd masters to disc via a mathmatical upscale it will look like crap.
With the Status of Ghibli and its pedigree i would hope they would have pristine vaulted elements archived, and with Disney having a stake in things too they should have enough money to do new Blu Rays just leave out the color tampering and dvnr please!
