First Teaser Trailer for Hua Mulan

Aaaaaaand another adaptation of yet another Chinese tale of heroism and greatness. Probably motivated by the international box-office success of John Woo’s Red Cliff (in my eyes one of the few really enjoyable output of the genre overkill), the famous poem/ballad of the Chinese girl-soldier Hua Mulan is currently being transformed into a full length movie starring Zhao Wei directed by Jingle Ma (Butterfly Lovers, Silver Hawk, Tokyo Riders). I guess most of you will know the story (young girl disguises herself as a boy to join the army and fight for her father) from the 1998 Disney adaptation starring that talking dragon… ;)
The first teaser trailer has been screened in Cannes where it was captured on cam, but here’s the subtitled ‘clean’ version from Mtime:

    Vicky Zhao ist schon eine gute Besetzung, wenn man überlegt, dass ursprünglich Michelle Yeoh (inzwischen Mitte 40!) die Hauptrolle spielen sollte… :fall:
    Nicht weil sie es nicht drauf hätte, sondern weils vom Alter her einfach nicht passt!

    Das wäre die unpassenste Besetzung gewesen, seit Roberto Benigni Pinocchio geschändet , äh gespielt hat… :p

    a) kann ich Zhao Wei nichts abgewinnen (“My Dream Girl” war jawohl schauspielerisch unter aller Kanone)
    und b) is Jingle Ma auch so nen Spezi

    najo, ich muss eh erstmal “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” fertig lesen bis ich mich an die Sichtung meiner beiden Red Cliff DVDs machen darf

    Na ja, ich finde sie halt sehr niedlich. Das sie keine Schauspielikone a la Maggie Cheung ist/wird ist klar… :p

    I think the comment was unfair to say it’s another epic film because of the success of Red Cliff. There was talks about making this film after the badly depicted Disney version. Lets just say the Chinese did not like that version with the “little” talking dragon. Because there was so many changes in the scripts, directors, actors, and even production company, it came out after Red Cliff. FYI: Michelle Yeoh was once attatched to this project to star as Mulan… But you are right about one thing, since it got made after Red Cliff, they used that(Red Cliff) as a cookie cutter to mold this film. I am disappointed, but then again, this film is not geared towards you nor me, but audience in China, that is their main market.
