Baton: First Trailer for rotoscope Anime from the directors of Versus and Lily Chou-Chou

Baton is a new anime from director Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Azumi) and Shunji Iwai (April Story, All About Lily Chou-Chou) that is being produced by US animation studio titmouse (huh?). There’s not much known about the story at the moment See update below!, only that Aya Ueto and (Hayato Ichihara will play the two main characters Apollo and Micha(?)l who live together with intelligent robots on a future Earth.
The three, about 20 minutes long Episodes of Baton will be shown during the 150th anniversary celebration of the city of Yokohama from April 28 to September 27.

According to the development studio Wild Boar Media, Baton is a mixture of “traditional rotoscope animation with added 2D and 3D effects”…the result kinda looks like A Scanner Darkly gets drunk with Freedom on a cocktail party thrown by Ralph Bakshi.
Update: Nippon Cinema has come up with a detailed synopsis for the flick:

On Planet Abel, humans and robots co-exist. One day a mysterious stowaway on a transport vessel tries to invade the planet, but is discovered by Apollo (Hayato Ichihara), a robot that looks like a human; and Mikaru (Aya Ueto), a human that looks like a robot. The stowaway had in his possession a memory chip containing the latest in camouflage software, the mysterious “Cipher” OS. Apollo takes the Cipher chip simply for fun, but has no idea what he’s getting himself into. He suddenly starts acting strange, but Mikaru has no idea what’s wrong or that Cipher is behind it. What exactly is Cipher? What sort of secrets does it hold? Apollo and Mikaru will unravel a mystery encompassing the past, present, and future to find out.

    Jetzt erst entdeckt. Sieht super aus.
    Ich liebe Rotoscope, habe ich mich doch erst kürzlich noch gefreut, dass
    Bakshis “Feuer und Eis” als Mediabook-Blu-ray neu aufgelegt wurde.
    Und Scanner Darkly im Rotoscope-Stil war eine congeniale Umsetzung der Buchvorlage von Philip K. Dick.

    Ich würde mir mehr solcher Filme wünschen. Schade, dass es so wenige Typen wie Bakshi gibt, die auch mal den Mut hatten, jenseits vom Disney-Familien-Kitsch auch andere Stoffe im Animationsstil umzusetzen.

    Komisch oder: CGI-Animationen und Zeichentrick werden in der westlichen Welt größtenteils bestenfalls als Familienunterhaltung angeboten.
    Ernstere Themen scheint man hierzulande den Leuten nicht zumuten zu wollen.
    Dabei zeigen Filme wie “Waltz with Bashir”, dass es durchaus möglich ist.
    Und unterm Strich ist ein Film wie “Avatar” auch nur ein CGI-Animationsfilm, auch wenn hier und da noch ein paar reale Schauspieler auftauchen.

    Bin gespannt, ob man in den nächsten Jahren diesbezüglich vielleicht doch noch umdenkt.

    Bin etwas vom Thema abgekommen. Sorry.
    Jedenfalls freue ich mich immer, wenn so Filme wie “Baton” auf den Markt erscheinen. :smile:
