Heute ist bei mir die Japan Blu-ray Disc von Joe Hisaishi in Budokan – Miyazaki Anime to Tomo ni Ayunda 25 Nenkan eingetrudelt, die neben dem grandiosen Jubiläumskonzert von Hayao Miyazakis Haus- und Hofkomponist Joe Hisaishi auch eine schöne Überraschung, für alle die sich täglich in den Schlaf weinen weil bisher noch kein Film von Studio Ghibli auf Blu-ray Disc erschienen ist, bereit hält.
Als Extras gibt es nämlich eine Reihe an Musikvideos mit Szenen aus einigen von Hayao Miyazakis Meisterwerken (leider ohne Totoro, Laputa und Chihiro) in HD Qualität zu bewundern! Die Videos liegen zwar leider nur in 1920×1080i vor und zeigen ein paar Kompressionsartefakte und Nachschärfungen (besonders Kiki), dürften aber trotzdem ganz gut zeigen was wir an Qualität mindestens erwarten können wenn Studio Ghibli im nächsten Jahr (Ponyo soll im Dezember den Startschuss geben) auf den BD Zug aufspringt.
Zu den 100 Screenshots (mit Spoiler!) sollte wie immer gesagt sein, daß das ganze in Bewegung deutlich besser aussieht als hier nach der Konvertierungskette darstellbar.

Wrong aspect ratios, edge enhancement, heavy cropping, gate weave that would give you motion sickness, and poor color timing are some of incompetence displayed in existing masters. They haven’t even had a direct digital transfer despite all their films being digital for 10 years. The masters they’ve used are from ancient times.
I don’t want the grain, cel shadows, or cel dust removed, but they still need to be carefully remastered from the best elements possible. Time is slowly taking these films away from us. And no one in charge seems to understand or care.

The first real Blu RAy scan was done for Ponyo, i hope they don’t dump the old dvd masters to disc via a mathmatical upscale it will look like crap.
With the Status of Ghibli and its pedigree i would hope they would have pristine vaulted elements archived, and with Disney having a stake in things too they should have enough money to do new Blu Rays just leave out the color tampering and dvnr please!
